Sadly, many families can’t afford the fresh fruit & veg they want and need. Healthy food often costs twice as much as the alternative and that puts it out of reach for a lot of UK households.
This is what Alexandra Rose Charity is trying to change with Rose Vouchers. These vouchers are given to families on low incomes and they can be exchanged for fruit & veg at a market. That means everyone eats better and the local economy gets a boost too.
A bit more on Rose Vouchers

Rose Vouchers are like a currency that’s accepted by a network of independent traders in London, Liverpool, Barnsley and Glasgow.
The vouchers help families get more fruit & veg into their diets, but they also support sellers by encouraging regular trade and positioning them as a source of healthy, low-cost food.
Eligible families get £4 of Rose Vouchers per child, per week. That goes up to £6 if the child is under one year old.

It was stressful before I had Rose Vouchers. When my kids would ask for something like apples, and I couldn’t afford them, I’d have to say, “Sorry, not this time.” It was a horrible feeling. Now I can choose fruit and veg that we all want to eat, and it’s such a relief.”

Making a difference
Since 2014, Alexandra Rose Charity has helped over 11,000 families get access to fresh fruit & veg so they can give their kids a healthy start.

After just six months of using Rose Vouchers, families have found that:
🍒 Fruit and veg intake improves by an average of 3 portions a day.
🍇 64% of kids now eat at least five portions a day (up from 7%)
🍓 55% of parents now eat at least five portions a day (up from 15%)
🍏 children develop healthy eating habits that last
🍍 they lose weight, sleep better, have more energy, can concentrate for longer and do more physical activity
*The number of portions (80g) is based on an average retail price (£0.24) of the top 10 fruits and vegetables by volume sold in the UK. A portion is defined as 80g for an adult according to NHS guidelines (https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/5-a-day/portion-sizes/). The average price per portion is derived from the retail price ranges of commonly consumed fruits and vegetables in the UK (www.selinawamucii.com)
