Recently, we met Kemi, who lives in Southwark with her young children. She has been collecting Rose Vouchers from her local Children and Families Centre for three years and enjoys spending them on fresh fruit and veg at her local market.
What does healthy eating mean to you?
Healthy eating means when you eat vegetables and things that provide more multivitamins to your body. Mostly, the best way to be healthy is when you use more vegetables and more fruits. It’s important because it improves your lifestyle. It helps you with your health as well, and it’s good for your body system.
What makes it harder to eat healthy food?
If you don’t have the money, especially when you don’t have the money to provide these things, it’s difficult. For example, now I know it’s good for me to eat healthy foods every day, and if I don’t have the capacity to get that, it’s very hard for me.
How have Rose Vouchers made a difference to the way you and your daughter eat?
[Rose Vouchers have] really, really supported me and my kids. The difference it has made is that it helps me get vegetables and fruit for them, which helps their health as well. Because if I can’t provide this now, it will be very hard for them to eat healthy food. They eat vegetables, they eat fruit, and they actually know what vegetables are. They know, for example, “this is a carrot,” and they know what it does for you if you eat it.
What do you like to buy with your Rose Vouchers?
I buy oranges and grapes. Actually, my kids love grapes. So just imagine if I didn’t have this voucher now to get them and go to the market. I can buy as much as I like because my kids, especially my boy, he loves grapes a lot. So I use this to buy grapes and bananas. It helps. I can’t really lie, it has really helped me a lot, and the kids. I love it. Please don’t stop it!
